Human & Rohde, Inc. prepared the design, construction details and landscape plan for this park dedicated to Baltimore County Olympians located in the center of Towson, Maryland. The site is less than an acre in size and formerly a Shell Gas Station. The design for the site was restricted by the requirements of on-going monitoring of a below-grade petroleum remediation system. This limited the location of amenities and trees and any improvements requiring footings. Three schematic plans were developed for review by Baltimore County. The selected park design included a paver plaza area, a stone park sign, monuments for each Olympian, bronze statue commemorating the renaissance of Baltimore County, winding paver walkway, picnic facilities, benches, and irrigation. The park was landscaped with low maintenance plantings to provide an urban garden that enhances the city’s business and restaurant center. Human & Rohde researched and prepared details for the monuments with brass plaques and for the sculpture’s pedestal base. Construction was completed in 2010 at a cost of approximately $250,000. Olympians Michael Phelps, Jessica Long and Larry Tyrone Hughes were present at the park’s dedication ceremony for the unveiling of their monuments in July 2010.
Locations for additional and future monuments were identified a few years later to accommodate the continuing success of Baltimore County athletes at the Olympic Games.
